Last week I discussed choices and consequences and stated that each choice we make has its own set of consequences. You choose to jump off a cliff – you’re going to hurt (if not kill) yourself. You lie in the sun for too long and you will get sunburned! These are examples of conscious choices we make.

But what about “unconscious” or “sub-conscious” choices? These are still choices we make but are to a large extent unaware of them. When you make yourself a cup of coffee adding milk and sugar (for those of us who do) is just and automatic process. We don’t think it through each and every time. It’s automatic!

But how did it get like that, how did it happen? It came about through an initial choice – how much milk, how much sugar? – which, repeated often enough, became a subconscious automatic process. A habit was born.

The same goes for driving a car. Can you remember when you were just learning and you had to consciously think about everything involved? Starting the car, engaging gear, releasing the park brake, looking in the mirrors, indicating, slowly releasing the foot-brake and, hesitantly, moving off and accelerating. A nerve-wracking experience to be sure!!! And now? You simply get in and essentially drive off without thinking about it.
